He pioneered a method of creating art that employed natural pigments and native wood to tell visual stories about Africa's history.

Pippa Skotnes is Cecil's daughter and is an artist, curator and scholar. Sound From the Thinking Strings was was the inaugural publication of Axeage Private Press. It honors the disappearing indigenous people of Southern Africa, the /Xam.
